About Sphalerite
Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral with a chemical composition of (Zn,Fe)S. Minable desposits of Sphalerite are found where hydrothermal activity brings hot, acidic, zinc-bearing fluids in contact with carbonate rocks. Here, sphalerite is deposited in veins, fractures, and cavities.
The name "sphalerite" comes from the Greek word "sphaleros" which means deceiving, alluding to the ease with which the dark, opaque varieties of Sphalerite are mistaken for galena (a lead ore). Names for sphalerite used in the past include "zinc blende," "blackjack," "steel jack," and "rosin jack."
